Local Host Organizations

DANIDA has long been associated with the development of the Noakhali region; in the 1980s it sponsored the Noakhali Rural Development Project, a multi-sectoral project which was then Denmark’s largest single aid intervention. Later, there have been a series of sectoral projects in the region in water supply and sanitation, rural roads, aquaculture and poultry rearing. Current support is under the Agricultural Sector Programme Support, Phase II, which incorporates components in Agricultural Extension (Integrated Crop Management), Rural Roads and Fisheries and Livestock.

Climate and environment related problems in the area:
Noakhali has a highly dynamic environment, due to its location on the western bank of the Meghna river estuary. Over the last 50-60 years there has been a massive process of erosion and land accretion, so that the coastline has shifted 50 kilometers south during that time.
In this context, several hundred thousands of poor people live with the constant threat of homelessness, damage to, and loss of, their possessions and means of livelihood, and risks of injury and death due to weather – related natural disasters – river bank erosion, storm, cyclone, flood, drought and water logging.
Meteorological data reveal that temperature has increased over the last 30 years with seasonal variations in this region. Increasing winter temperatures have negative effects on winter crops. The dry season may also be getting longer, affecting the viability of recently introduced freshwater prawn culture.
Nevertheless, some of these change have created opportunities for livelihood, especially in the waterlogged areas in the north of Noakhali, where aquaculture, duck rearing and dry-season rice cultivation have become options.
