Status : Completed Project Title : Asia Least-Cost Greenhouse Gas Abatement Strategy (ALGAS) Client : Ministry of Environment & Forest, Government of Bangladesh Donor/Funder: Asian Development Bank (ADB), Manila, Philippines Project-In-Charge : Dr. Saleemul Huq Project Description : The study was undertaken jointly by BCAS, BIDS, BUP and BUET on behalf of the Ministry of Environment & Forest of the Government of Bangladesh under financial support from Asian Development Bank. The ALGAS project assisted the country to make the following achievements: (1) preparation of a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission inventory; (2) projection of GHG up to the year 2020 and possible least-cost GHG abatement strategy; (3) portfolio of possible projects to reduce GHG emissions while also pursuing our development objectives; (4) development of national capacity to carry out future research and policy analysis on climate change issues, both within government as well as non-government institutions; (5) increased recognition of the importance of climate change amongst high level policy-makers through national workshops. Time Period : 1996-97 (Two years) Outputs : Main outputs of the project are as follows ; • National inventory of GHG emissions • Projection report on GHG emissions • Report on least-cost GHG up to 2020 • Portfolio of possible projects • Report on abatement action plan Besides these reports country now has a good number of trained personnel to carryout future update of the GHG inventory, analysis etc. For Further Information : Dr. Saleemul Huq |
