Project Description:  

BCAS is undertaking a study on “Management of Land-based Coastal Pollution” in two coastal in districts of Bangladesh ( Chittagong and Barisal) under Global Programme of Action (GPA) with financial support from UNEP, Hague, the Netherlands. The main object of the project is to control and manage land based coastal pollution both from industrial and non-industrial activities for protecting coastal and marine resources base and promotes sustainable resource use and development. In order to achieve the overall objective of the project, the following activities will be carried out.

The scale and extent of effluent (domestic and industrial) discharge of two coastal cities will be assessed including GIS based maps. A summary report will be prepared on two cities;

Based on assessment report and findings priority areas and options for addressing land based coastal pollution and it associated problems will be identified and commitment of stakeholders will be solicited for addressing the problems;

Depending on priority area and commitment of the stakeholders a concept paper will be developed for interventions;

Based on identified stakeholders and their commitments, an institutional mechanism will be developed for carrying out local level actions to address the priority problems; and

A limited scale pilot activity will be initiated and acted upon in at least one ward of a coastal city involving local institutes and organizations.

Outputs:  

The project activity will deliver the following outputs as described in the project documents. These are

  • Summary report (including GIS maps) on the scale and extent of effluent discharge (domestic and industrial) in two coastal cities

  • A Report with Priority Area for Actions and Possible Options for addressing the problems and identified stakeholders with their possible role

  • A Concept Paper on Intervention Strategy to address the problem in a holistic manner

  • Pilot Project Initiated and implemented in association with partner(s) and government authorities.
