Division : Administration

Status : Ongoing

Project Title: Management of Aquatic Ecosystem through Community Husbandry (Mach - II)

Client: Ministry of Fisheries and livestock

Donor/Funder: USAID

Project-In-Charge: Mujibur Rahman

Project Description:

MACH is a Government of Bangladesh (GOB) program sponsored by USAID. The governments of Bangladesh and the United States of America approved the Project in May 1998. MACH seeks to demonstrate that sustainable management of wetlands resources is possible with the participation of stakeholders and users of those resources. It advocates a multi-disciplinary, multi-sector and participatory process of planning, implementation and monitoring for sustainable wetland resource management. Recognizing that the reduction of fishing pressure is a critical part of reviving the wetland fisheries, MACH has included supplemental income-generating activities that will be focused on fishers and others directly dependent of fishing.

MACH carries on its activities in field sites in Hail Haor in Moulvibazar District, the lower Bangsi/Turag River Basin in Gazipur and Tangail District, and the Upper Kongshaw/Malijhree River Basin in Sherpur District. MACH programs are being implemented by four non-government organizations, namely Winrock International, the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), the Center for Natural Resources Studies (CNRS) and CARITAS- Bangladesh.

Time Period: 2003 - October 2006

Expected Outputs:

MACH has been pursuing several activities, tasks and events in order to achieve its goals and objectives. The targets of these activities fall under broad categories like user group formation, training, and demonstration of agro-aquaculture activities, credit, implementation of alternative income generating activities and primary healthcare sanitation, nutrition and educational services. The targets have been set yearly, six-monthly, quarterly and monthly to be accomplished within the project period. Project participants (especially the poor wetland users and other community members) are expected to continue the activiti3s for the sustainable development of their socio-economic condition and the conservation and enhancement of wetland resources (fisheries and other wetland products).
