About the Book

The aim of the publication is to make people aware of the adverse effects of spurious medicines. One of the objectives of this booklet is to increase the awareness of the readers about the seriousness of the problem. A number of cases were recorded and the malpractices of the producers of sub-standard medicine exposed. Some pharmaceutical companies manufacturing “Paracetamol Syrup” had used a toxic substance “diethylene glycol”, which had been used in hospitals and clinics in Bangladesh causing children to die of kidney failure.

As a result of the work of three doctors, the activities of the manufacturers of this deadly syrup, which were contrary to both the drug policy of the Government of Bangladesh and all other drug related laws were discovered. The book tells us of the views of the experts on this subject. The concluding chapter has a set of recommendations to prevent future recurrence of drug abuse. People interested in public health issues will find the contents of this booklet useful.
