Brief Description: The study was carried out in 12 Asian countries in 1990 on national emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), projections of GHG emissions by 2020 and an analysis of GHG abatement options in different economic sectors. The study formulated national GHG abatement strategies consistent with national development priorities and prepared a portfolio of GHG abatement projects and national action plans embodying national development objectives. A team of national technical experts (NTEs) undertook the country study with active involvement of the Government agencies. ALGAS involved a number of regional capacity-building activities such as training workshop, consultation and baseline survey. Empirical measurements of methane from rice fields as well as analytical modeling of the energy and forestry sector were also carried out. The NTE team also conducted several national workshops in which interim results of the study were presented and feedback was obtained from government agencies, industries, researchers and NGOs.
Output The study pointed that future GHG emission will depend on the changes in land use. The study also mentioned the coordination gap between economic and environmental activities. It was reported that, enforcement of regulatory policies and measures in the country are often vague. Given the general policy and regulatory needs, few recommendations were suggested including awareness raising, industrial energy use efficiency, implementation of gas-based power generation, dissemination of improved cooking stoves, encouraging CNG driven vehicles, introducing CFL and solar electricity. The ALGAS project assisted Bangladesh in preparing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission inventory, projection of GHG up to the year 2020 and possible least-cost GHG abatement strategy. The project also helped to develop the national capacity to carry out future research and policy analysis on climate change issues.
