Socio-economic Survey in Reedland Forest Area under the Reedland Afforestation Project in Sylhet Forest Division

Project Title:   Socio-economic Survey in Reedland Forest Area under the Reedland Afforestation Project in Sylhet Forest Division
Type of Project Forestry research
Duration:   March 1996-August 1997
Status:   Completed
Partner Organizations:   Department of Forest under the Ministry of Environment and Forest of the Govt. of Bangladesh and BCAS.
Key words: Reedland forest, haor basin, wetland, freshwater lakes and marshes, ecology
Main Objective:   1. To conduct the socio-economic survey of the reedland forest area, and 2. to prepare an inventory of the forest resources.
Brief Description: Processes (activities, project sites etc.): There are 23,590 hectares of gazette reed land in the Haors and low-lying lands in Sylhet Forest Division. The reedland are located in the Haor Basin of Sylhet comprising of the freshwater wetlands, a vast alluvial plain, numerous rivers and streams, and hundreds of shallow freshwater lakes and marshes. Wetlands have great ecological, economic, commercial and socio-economic importance. Methodological approach: BCAS carried out socio-economic survey through Participatory method and prepared an inventory list of forest resources. Collected data for preparing integrated management plan for the study areas and also prepared maps showing different locations of reed lands in the different scales. The socio-economic survey was conducted using PRA, surveying and mapping.
Output Results achieved/key findings/outputs: An integrated management plan for the project area was prepared. A final report incorporating the findings and lessons learnt was also prepared. Lessons learnt by the implementing organisation/s: The study followed participatory methods and produced valuable data regarding to the reed land forest resources. The data can be used for further research on reedland forest of Bangladesh and elsewhere
