Main Objective:   To identify the actions/initiatives undertaken by different sectors, government agencies, NGOs, political parties, and other social organizations. To identify the financial, institutional, social and anthropological problems the actors had to face. To make recommendations/ suggestions.
Brief Description: Department of Environment and Forest of the Govt. of Bangladesh initiated the study titled “The Assessment of Environmental Impact of 1998 Flood on Dhaka City”. The study was one of the components titled “Extent of Inundation and Identification of Routes of Ingress and Egress of Floodwater and Drainage” for which Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) was awarded.
Output Detailed date wise inundation map of Dhaka city during the flood 1998 and ward wise digital database of Dhaka city were prepared. Analysis of the impact of flood using PC ARC/info, IDRISI and ARCVIEW was carried out. Flood inundation areas were plotted. Arranging shelter, providing food, managing safe drinking water /sanitary facility, and offering health care were the main services offered to the flood victims. NGOs took special care of hundreds of weak mothers and their underfed children by providing powdered milk and high protein biscuits.
