Main Objective:   To create digital GIS database for South Balashur village in Srinagar Thana under Munshiganj district of Bangladesh.
Brief Description: Location of tube wells was plotted on a hard copy of the mouza map based on the orientation of the plots and the plot number. Local people particularly the landowners were consulted to identify plots in the land. After identification the tube well locations were digitized in the DLRS maps. Geo-referencing was done using the DGPS reading of the identified intersections or corners of the plots on the DLRS maps. The survey was carried out in the village of South Balashur under Srinagar Thana of Munshiganj district in Bangladesh.
Output Mapping of the Balashur village showing the location of all tube wells and plot boundaries along with other important landmarks. A total of 136 tube wells were identified, of which 130 were tested by the Dhaka Community Hospital. It was found that all tube wells were contaminated by arsenic with an average depth of 195 feet. Each of the tube wells served about 15 persons. Almost every household uses tube well water for drinking purpose. The arsenic problem and its mitigation are very much location specific and characterized by high degree of variability. The survey was a part of creating a GIS database that would facilitate future researches regarding to arsenic mitigation.
