Main Objective:   To assess the environmental impacts of textile, dyeing and printing industries.
Brief Description: Processes (activities, project sites etc.): Under the Global Environmental Change Programme of the British Economic and Social Research Council, Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) conducted research on the environmental impact of small-scale industries in the Third World. The research was based on sub-sector case studies of brick-making and mining in Zimbabwe and textile dyeing and printing in Bangladesh. BCAS conducted the study in three districts - Dhaka, Narayangonj and Narshingdi to assess the environmental impacts of textile, dyeing and printing industries. The study gave the present status of the environmental pollution related to the textile processing and possible strategies for mitigating the impacts of pollution. Methodological approach: Conducted field surveys through prescribed questionnaires in the project areas and prepared reports on environmental impact of textile, dyeing and printing industries in Bangladesh.
Output Results achieved/key findings/outputs: Based on study findings a report titled "Environmental Impact of Textile Dyeing and Printing Industries in Bangladesh" was prepared. Lessons learnt by the implementing organisation/s: Detailed analysis of the scale of pollution by the industries highlight the urgent need of concerted efforts to mitigate the impacts of pollution.
