Civil Society Report on Sustainable Development of Bangladesh.

Project Title:   Civil Society Report on Sustainable Development of Bangladesh.
Type of Project Trade and sustainable development study
Duration:   September 2002
Status:   Completed
Partner Organizations:   SEI-Boston and BCAS
Key words: Trade, sustainable development, civil society organizations, ecology, environment, future generations.
Main Objective:   To prepare a comprehensive report on the status of sustainable development practices in Bangladesh.
Brief Description: Processes (activities, project sites etc.): The WCED views sustainable development as “…the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. …a pursuit of sustainable development requires … a production system that respects the obligation to preserve the ecological base for that development" (WCED, 1987). A report on the status of sustainable development practices in Bangladesh was presented at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) at Johannesburg in South Africa. Methodological approach: Literature review, consultation and meetings.
Output Results achieved/key findings/outputs: A report on the status of development and initiatives undertaken by the government, NGOs, civil societies during the past decade was published and launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) at Johannesburg, South Africa. Lessons learnt by the implementing organisation/s: The report outlined current practices and future probable strategies for sustainable development of Bangladesh. Sustaining development in all aspects of its economic, social, and environmental spheres has remained only a dream, and not a reality for its population of 129 million, and therefore, the term somewhat lost its essence. The term "Sustainable Development" has become a cliché in Bangladesh in recent years. It is now merely regarded as a slogan of the political elite, local development thinkers and decision-makers.
