MACH - Pollution - II - ISMP

Project Title:   MACH - Pollution - II - ISMP
Type of Project Industrial pollution study
Duration:   1999-2006
Status:   Completed
Partner Organizations:   Stockholm Environment Institute at York, University of Leeds, BCAS, DFID-UK, and USAID
Key words: Pollution, MACH project, wetlands and water resources, tannery, textile industry, consensus building, dispute resolution, mitigation.
Main Objective:   To improve management of natural resources through the spread of community management practices. 2. to enhance community based wetlands and water resource management.
Brief Description: Processes (activities, project sites etc.): The project was undertaken under the title "Managing Pollution from Small and Medium Scale Industries" in collaboration with the Management of Aquatic-Ecosystems through Community Husbandry (MACH), a government of Bangladesh project supported by the USAID. The project reported serious pollution problems in Kaliakoir Upazila under Gazipur district. The report says about heavy degradation of echo system in Mokesh Beel area and Turag River. Based on the report the project undertook pollution studies which identified local tannery and textile Industries as the primary polluters. The work involved consensus building and dispute resolution, community awareness and mobilization, cleaner production auditing and community based pollution mitigation and monitoring. Methodological approach: The project used an approach that tackled both the causes of pollution through developing changes to the production process with the industrialists and effects of pollution through industry and community based mitigation measures.
Output Results achieved/key findings/outputs: a. Identification of pollution reduction measures. b. Recycling options of selected waste stream. c. Identification of alternative raw materials and process. d. End of pipe analysis of effluent and based on the result optimization of Effluent treatment plant. e. Creating awareness among the community, buyers and DoE. Lessons learnt by the implementing organisation/s: Community based pollution mitigation and monitoring is an effective tool to reduce industrial pollution.
